Performance-graded asphalt cement (PGAC), also referred to as performance-graded binder (PGB), represents a specialized type of asphalt binder integral to the formulation of hot mix asphalt (HMA). Its unique attribute lies in its tailored performance characteristics, meticulously designed to align with prevailing climate conditions and anticipated traffic loads.
What sets PGAC apart is its classification and specification, which stem from its performance properties rather than its source or physical attributes. The grading framework, originating from the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP), introduces a paradigm shift by emphasizing the functional aspects crucial for optimal asphalt performance.
The performance grading of asphalt cement is rooted in two pivotal properties: high-temperature performance, gauging resistance to rutting, and low-temperature performance, evaluating resistance to cracking. Each performance grade receives a distinct identifier, denoted as PG XX-YY, with XX signifying the high-temperature grade and YY representing the low-temperature grade.
This systematic approach not only enhances the precision of asphalt binder selection but also underscores a commitment to durability and resilience in diverse environmental contexts. The SHRP-developed grading system stands as a pivotal tool in advancing the quality and longevity of asphalt pavements by ensuring compatibility with specific operational challenges and climatic nuances.
